ABOUT MASTER MICHAEL CHO

Born in 1983, Master Michael Cho started training in Taekwondo at the young age of 6 in 1989. He began training under Grand Master Byung Min Kim in Westchester, New York as part of an after school activity. After just a few months of training, he realized that Taekwondo was more than an activity, it was a sport for which he had a natural gift and enjoyed tremendously. He continued to train for then next few years by attending classes, going to local tournaments to compete, and over time, helping to teach his juniors.

In April of 1993, Master Cho tested for his 1st degree Black Belt in the World Taekwondo Federation under Grand Master Kim. Having earned his Black Belt, he gained much confidence and began teaching classes while still learning and training under many instructors and countless Masters from Korea including trainers for the Korean Tigers, the World Renowned Demonstration team.

For the next 5 years, he competed regularly in school, local and national tournaments including the Junior Olympics. He was also an active member of the Demonstration Team within Grand Master Kim's School. Through competition and demonstration, he was able to exhibit his natural ability and his expanded knowledge of the sport through techniques ranging from board breaking, forms, sparring and weapons handling.

As a High School student, Master Cho’s family moved to upstate New York which forced him to find a new Taekwondo School to attend on a daily basis (although he continued to train under Grand Master Kim as much as possible on weekends and holiday breaks). At the school he attended upstate, he earned his 1st degree Black Belt under the American Taekwondo Association (ATA) through his ATA Instructor Nathan Robinson. Master Cho quickly began instructing classes in this association because he was so passionate about the sport and instructing his juniors. During his instruction time here, he earned his 2nd Degree ATA Black Belt under Robinson and also took to competing more heavily at tournaments held throughout the country, earning various titles - including Forms World Champion in 2000 and 2001.

In 2002, when he began college in lower New York, he returned to train under Grand Master Kim regularly and earned his 2nd Degree Black Belt in the WTF. At this time, he also commenced teaching both children and adult classes at Grand Master Kim’s school.

In 2005, Master Cho began teaching the Afters program at North Mianus Elementary School in Greenwich, Connecticut, where he still to the present day continues to instruct the program. He has since started to teach Afters in several of the other Greenwich Public Schools to spread the sport to more children with interest in Martial Arts.

Through the years, he has continued to train previous students for tournaments and individual goal training and decided to open his own program in 2006 at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich in the hopes to further his experience and love for training and teaching others. In 2007, the classes were relocated to the Western Greenwich Civic Center.

While teaching his own students at the Civic Center, Master Cho had continued to train for his own growth as well, earning his 3rd Degree Black Belt in the WTF in 2008 and his 4th Degree Black Belt in Kumyedo (Sword) in 2009.

In October 2010, Master Cho and his Cho’s Taekwondo School finally found its own home on the Western side of Greenwich. A 2700 square foot studio open to children and adults, the Oak Street location is located just off of West Putnam Avenue, close to Glenville, Byram and Central Greenwich.

Within a year of opening this new location, Master Cho tested for his 4th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo (WTF) in October 2011, under Master Ou-Nam Kwon, as a role model to his students to show that training in Taekwondo is a continual process and that you can always learn more.
